Eleven players West Ham should raid the relegated clubs for

Posted on Thursday, 17th May 2012 by Richard Williams

Sunday was arguably one of the most intense, dramatic, exciting and heart stopping moments in football ever seen. Sound’s over the top but in reality it was anything but! The football nation has sat in front of their telly numerous times over the last ten years having been whipped into a frenzy by messrs Redknapp, Keys, Gray and Souness only to have witnessed an occasion with the excitement of dance act number 17 on Britain’s got Talent.

The cut and thrust, the diversity and the sheer way in which the scales changed balance over a ten minute period will forever etch itself in the hearts of even the most southern of supporter (ironically most of them would be United fans anyway!)

The fastest growing Hammers website is now on Facebook, click the link to be entered into our up and coming competitions http://www.facebook.com/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

While this was going on, my thoughts turned to Sam Allardyce and what he was thinking. As much as the title race was a spectacle not to be missed, Sam had other fish to fry (and probably batter). With Wolves and Blackburn already in the Championship, it was QPR or Bolton who were on the precipice of relegation. I began drawing up next seasons transfer targets in my head. a unique twist on the life of a West Ham fan given that we are normally on the receiving end of the scavengers. Even though these teams were relegated, and certainly with Wolves and Blackburn well deserved, there is a strong selection of players up for grabs.

The financial difficulties faced by all three clubs relegated have been very well publicised and we know they must sell to stay afloat. While evaluating the players we could potentially sign, I drew up a team in my head worthy or a mid table Premier League finish.

GK – (Bolton) – a solid keeper who has been around the block and then some. Once touted by Sir Alex Ferguson and the subject of numerous top four bids, he decided to stay where he would achieve first team football. Arguably on the receiving end of the best performance a by a Premier League keeper this season. With the imminent departure of Robert Green, and promotion on the cards, a steady , experienced pair of hands could be what we need next season.

RB – (Blackburn) – Electric pace and a fantastic final delivery, Olsson has terrorised defenders all season. His ability to make up ground on wingers with a last ditch tackle has seen him progress in the team and internationally. He could be an ideal replacement for Faubert who’s sub standard performances and departure in the summer will prompt replacing.

CB – (Blackburn) – Although he has had some mixed performances towards the end of the season, Arsenal were interested in signing him and reports suggest they were very close to it. He has the ability aerially and is a great leader. He also has age on his side and would be a good back up should Faye leave in the summer.

Looking for experience? just want to be heard outside of the Boleyn? we are currently looking for writers, drop us an email at foreverwestham@snack-media.com for more details

CB – (Bolton) – Captained Middlesborough before their demise, numerous England U21 caps alongside Tomkins, Wheater would be great young player to bring into our squad. The only issue is his current knee injury but perhaps there is a bargain to be had if we gamble?

LB – (Bolton) – Maybe not with the pace of Olsson but certainly with the defensive capabilities, Alonso has arguably been one of Bolton’s best players this season. McCartney’s injury troubles this season have seen us push Taylor back into left back where he looks uncomfortable. Granted he has the quality to carry out the role but his delivery is a big part of his game and as such, he would prefer to be higher up the pitch. Alonso makes fantastic overlapping runs and they would work great together.

LM – (Blackburn) – Fantastic energy up and down the wing, Pederson has shown for countless seasons that he has a fantastic delivery, is lethal from set pieces and has vast International experience. He can both defend and attack, and would be a great addition to the squad.

CM – Jamie O’Hara (Wolves) – we won’t hold it against him that he is an ex Spud, O’Hara shows commitment no matter where he plays. He has a great ability from free kicks and has not shown true potential in a very disappointing Wolves side this season. Based on work rate and his ability to pick a pass, he is a useful addition but would probably make the bench.

RM – (Bolton) – In my opinion, this is the most needed player of the lot. this season alone we have played Vaz Te, Cole, Collison, Noble and Faubert wide right, all of whom do not play there. West Ham’s lack of width has cost us this season without the ability to switch to plan B. Eagles is quick, can beat a man, has fantastic delivery and pops up with vital goals. a starter in next years team.

AMR – Junior Hoillet (Blackburn) – The best player in this team. His numerous wonder goals this season nearly kept Blackburn up alone. He is young, quick and can score on site from anywhere. The type of player who can come up with that bit of magic that wins games. unfortunately for us, it seems he will be going to a top club but if we act fast anything’s possible.

AML – (Wolves) – this really is a no brainer. One of the hottest properties of all three relegated clubs given that his natural position is left wing, he is English and has International experience. With Taylor playing more defensive and with a cloud of scepticism from the Upton Park faithful, a goal scoring and attacking winger is just what we need.

CF – (Wolves) – How Wolves went down with the attacking promise of Fletcher and Doyle up front amazes me. Fletcher is a class act, scoring fantastic goals for Wolves this season in some of their biggest games. He can score with either foot or his head and is the sort of player who would have made a big difference for us this season when we were not hitting the net. The reason he would suit our style is his ability to hold up the ball and link others in. again, I fear we must be quick to act before a big club comes in.

In addition to the above squad, you could even fill a subs bench. Kevin Doyle narrowly missed out on a starting place and is another player we should be looking at. He has experience with both Reading and Wolves scoring goals wherever he plays. do not be fooled by the lack of service he has had in a poor Wolves side, he is a great goal scorer. Karl Henry is a tough tackling defensive midfielder, Formica and Yakubu score goals at Blackburn and mark Davies is a promising young Midfielder with drive and the ability to score a goal.

Ever dreamt about getting paid for reading about West Ham? Well now you can make dreams a reality http://bit.ly/ffc-foreverwestham

So while others are marveling at a fantastic end to a season, looking forward to the play off final and the Champions League, West Ham fans would forgive Allardyce for taking his eye of the prize over the next couple of days to start making moves on some valuable additions to our team. It may sound presumptious to start making ‘Premier League’ signings before you have arrived there but the greatest managers are always two steps ahead and the Premier League vultures will no doubt be circling already.

The next two weeks will prove VITAL for next seasons success, acting now will no doubt prevent us paying over the odds for the Ljunbergs and Boa Mortes! now is the time for Mr Gold and Sullivan to prove that they have changed the old ways and assert themselves as the shrewd businessmen they profess to be.

Agree with these as potential signings? let Richard know at http://www.claretsweatandtears.co.uk/home/2012/05/14/poachem-utd/

would definately take Hoillet and Pederson, Pederson is tried and trusted and Hoillet is a really exciting talent, unfortunately i think he has higher expetations unless the davids really push the boat out.

Facebook’s Overnight Millionaires Begin Lavish Spending Spree

Facebook’s $104 billion initial public offering on Friday transformed thousands of young people into instant millionaires – as well as a few billionaires – and already the booming luxury market in Silicon Valley is experiencing an upswing.

Multi-million dollar mansions and $100,000 Porsches are flying off local shelves in the Palo Alto, Santa Clara and Menlo Park areas of California. And the charge of luxury living is being led by a group of young entrepreneurs and techies as well as investors and venture capitalists that have scored famously from Facebook’s Nasdaq debut.

Facebook (FB) began trading on the stock exchange Friday morning in a $104 billion IPO that marked the second-biggest in history behind Visa (V) and ahead of General Motors (GM). when CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the opening bell, he and few close colleagues became instant billionaires, while thousands of lower-level employees became millionaires.

The sudden wealth has already seeped into the local economy, causing sales of high-end cars like Porches and Bentleys to soar, and penthouses to sell hundreds of thousands of dollars above listing prices.

Local restaurants like Silicon Valley watering hole and local tech favorite Buck’s of Woodside – located just a few miles from Facebook’s headquarters and often considered the bellwether of the local economy there – have also reported a recent boom.

“It’s the kind of insanity we’ve seen before but really amped up now,” Buck’s owner Jamis MacNiven said. While people in Silicon Valley were “already living pretty fat,” he said the Facebook IPO has caused even greater demand for houses and cars.

Having been a local joint in Woodside for 22 years, Buck’s has been a favorite of the Silicon Valley tech elite since the advent of the Internet, hosting young start-up meetings for some well-known tech companies including Netscape, Hotmail and PayPal. It’s a regular breakfast spot for techies stationed nearby, including those at Facebook.

“A lot of the Internet was born at Buck’s,” MacNiven said.

Business at Buck’s has “always been really good,” he said, noting that “people can’t spend more at Buck’s because they can only eat so much,” but one new trend the restaurant has noticed is a recent influx in Scandinavians. from Norway and Denmark to Sweden and Finland, Europeans have been traveling to Silicon Valley in droves searching for new opportunities.

Meanwhile, swanky restaurant Madera in Menlo Park, a part of the high-end Rosewood Sand Hill hotel, is booked almost daily for lunch, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.

But perhaps more of a bellwether of broader economic times in the region is the mass rise in luxury home and car sales.

Silicon Valley real estate agent Ken DeLeon said the real estate market had been moving up earlier this year in anticipation of the Facebook IPO.

“Silicon Valley is the only region in America where new all-time highs are being set and this is due to Facebook’s IPO coupled with the amazingly strong fundamentals of the leading Silicon Valley companies,” he said.

Homes have been selling over list price, which is an unusual turn of events in what has been virtually a buyers market in other parts of the country since the housing market collapsed four years ago.

The market has recently leaned so much in favor of the seller in the Valley that some buyers are even taking out ads and offering to pay an obscene amount of money all in cash to win luxury dream homes.

DeLeon, whose list of clients includes some of the Valley’s top tech elite, including executives from Facebook and LinkedIn (LNKD), said he started to get creative with the ads after realizing that his newly-rich clients were facing fierce competition from other Valley elites.

“It’s such a strong market, we’re having buyers going out to promote themselves,” he said.

A house DeLeon initially told a client could sell for $2 million in January ended up selling for $2.28 billion in cash in March. A ranch-style tear-down in Palo Alto recently listed for nearly $1.2 million was sold after 38 offers about $450,000 above the asking price, 38% higher. two homes so far this year have sold for more than $600,000 above list price.

The average price for Palo Alto is up 14% from last year to an all-time high of more than $1.96 million. A majority of houses are selling in the $1 million to $10 million range, DeLeon said.

At the same time, luxury cars have been off the charts in the San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

“Ferrari lines are pretty long,” Buck’s owner MacNiven said.

From April 2011 to March 2012, the percentage of luxury cars per 100 new registered vehicles was 20.84% in the three counties, compared with a national average of just 11.25%, according to data from automotive research firm Polk.

In San Francisco alone, luxury cars, including Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and BMW, made up 29.36% of the total, which is almost three-times the national average.

“Since I have been pulling these numbers, I have never seen as high as 29.36%,” said Tom Libby, lead analyst for Polk’s North American forecasting practice. “It’s extremely high.”

Usually, 15% is considered high, so this is “really, really extraordinary,” he said. The Valley’s high percentage of luxury-car buying is among the highest in the U.S.

Perhaps even more notable is the number of hybrids being scooped up in Northern California. While the national average is just 2.21%, the number of dual gas and electric vehicles being sold near San Francisco is 8.79%. to give some perspective, the national average has stood between 2% and 3% for the past few years.

“I don’t’ think I’ve ever seen anything in the 8′s,” Libby said. “Hybrids are four times as popular there as other places in the country.”

It’s probably a reflection, Libby said, of the wealthy buying hybrids as recreational vehicles.

“People who have this type of money will buy vehicles sort of as an extra,” Libby said. “With this type of wealth, it’s a different landscape, buying whatever they want without thought to cost.”

From Zuckerberg, who at the age of 28 is now the 29th-richest man in the world, to Bono, who made a whopping $1.5 billion on the IPO, surpassing Paul McCartney as the richest musician in the world, no one can say just how Facebook’s rich plan to spend their money.

But the tab is likely to include lavish homes, cars, Valley parties and vacations – possibly even strategic investments in other new tech startups (those that don’t compete with Facebook, of course).

“There’s a huge amount of wealth there,” Libby said. It’s a trend that started with “other Internet startups becoming so wealthy so quickly,” and is likely only set to continue in the years to come.

Facebook stock closes slightly above $38 IPO price

Facebook updated its status to “public company” on Friday.

After an anxiety-filled half-hour delay, its stock began trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market for the first time as investors were finally able to put a dollar value on the company that turned online social networking into a global cultural phenomenon.

But shares closed their first day of trading Friday only slightly above the company’s IPO price of $38 a share, as investors cooled on the stock after its highly anticipated debut.

Facebook shares closed up 0.6 percent at $38.23.

The tech giant priced its IPO at $38 a share Thursday, the top end of its range, indicating tremendous investor appetite for the offering. Seconds after shares debuted Friday morning, the stock surged 13 percent to nearly $43 a share. but shares trimmed gains over the remainder of Friday’s session and even threatened to dip below the IPO price several times.

But as many people looked for a big first-day pop in Facebook’s share price, the single-digit increase was somewhat of a letdown.

“It wasn’t quite as exciting as it could have been,” said Nick Einhorn, an analyst with IPO advisory firm Renaissance Capital. “But I don’t think we should view it as a failure.”

Indeed, the small jump in price could be seen as an indication that Facebook and the investment banks that arranged the initial public offering priced the stock in an appropriate range.

It’s also a supply and demand issue. Facebook offered nearly 20 percent of its available stock in the IPO, so there was enough to meet demand. In comparison, Google offered just 7.2 percent of its stock when it went public in 2004.

To IPOdesktop’s Francis Gaskins, it means mom-and-pop investors are becoming “much more educated and careful” about not buying into hype. And he said that the banks taking Facebook public have learned from the 10 IPOs of social media companies in the past year and are better able to gauge how much stock to make available in an initial offering. he said a rise of 5 percent to 8 percent in this “tough market” is a success.

It might not have been possible for the social network to live up to the hype that led up to its IPO. It’s Facebook, after all, a place where people are emotionally invested in endless online diversions and rekindled friendships, an endless depository of baby photos, favorite songs and fleeting memories.

NATO, Afghanistan hammer out long-term ties

  • NEW: Russia expands help with ISAF transit
  • NEW: Civilian casualties and good government are broached
  • ISAF reaffirms support of Afghan peace moves
  • Leaders want to make security leadership transition by 2014

For more about the country and the war, read the Afghanistan Crossroads blog.

Lisbon, Portugal (CNN) — NATO and the Afghan government on Saturday forged a "long-term" partnership declaration — an agreement that will leave international forces in the war-torn country for many years after a planned military transition in 2014.

"we will stay as long as it takes to finish our job," said Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO’s secretary-general.

"NATO is in this for the long term. we will not transition until our Afghan partners are ready. we will stay, after transition, in a supporting role," he also said.

He and Afghan President Hamid Karzai signed the pact before reporters at the NATO summit in Lisbon. along with U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, they made remarks and took questions from reporters.

"Today marks the beginning of a new phase in our mission in Afghanistan. we will launch the process by which the Afghan government will take leadership for security throughout the country, district by district, province by province. The direction, starting today, is clear: towards Afghan leadership and Afghan ownership," Rasmussen said.

NATO, whose International Security assistance Force has been battling insurgents for years in Afghanistan, will start transferring security leadership to Afghans next year, with a goal for Afghans to be in the lead by 2014.

Missile system will protect Europe, U.S. Rebuilding NATO How to get out of Afghanistan

"that is the vision President Karzai has set out. It is a vision we share, and we will make it a reality, starting early next year," Rasmussen said.

As the changeover occurs, coalition forces will focus on supporting roles, such as training soldiers and police, and helping the country develop its government, infrastructure and economy.

The agreement reaffirms NATO’s "enduring commitment to Afghanistan’s security and stability."

When asked about the transfer timetable however, Rasmussen said, "I don’t foresee ISAF troops in a combat role beyond 2014, provided, of course, that the security situation" permits a "more supportive role."

"Let me stress the agreement we have signed today is not only a signal to Afghan people we will stay committed," Rasmussen said, "it’s a signal we won’t leave behind a security vacuum that could create instability."

Karzai — who has been critical of international troops in Afghanistan, in part for their role in causing civilian casualties — was pleased by the "keen awareness" among world leaders in Lisbon toward the "realities" in the country.

He also said the leaders were supportive of the country’s efforts to reach out and make peace with insurgents, citing the formation of the High Peace Council — a group dedicated to pursuing peace with militants.

"On all the agendas, I found voices of concord and agreement from world leaders," he said.

NATO said ISAF leaders "reaffirmed their support for the Afghan-led process of reconciliation and re-integration."

"There was also agreement that these Afghan-led efforts to reconcile and re-integrate insurgents are for those fighters who renounce violence, cut links with terrorist groups and accept the Afghan constitution," NATO said.

Both Karzai and Rasmussen stressed their optimism over the transition plan. Karzai said the "determination and hard work" of the Afghans and the "strong commitment" of the international community will make the plan work.

Rasmussen cited improvements across the country. a decade ago, he said, Afghanistan was "torn apart." Since then, there have been strides militarily and in other sectors, citing the "rapid growth" in security force numbers.

Ban lauded what he called a "successful meeting."

"as we move ahead, we must be guided by realities, not schedules. Let us remember Afghanistan has been at war for decades," Ban said. "There are no short cuts to peace. The U.N. is committed to supporting the Afghans over the long term."

The U.S. and NATO allies are looking to turn two or three Afghan provinces over to Afghan control by June, with "several more" in the summer or fall.

"Starting early next year, Afghan forces will begin taking the lead for security operations," Rasmussen said.

"this will begin in certain districts and provinces, and based on conditions, will gradually expand throughout the country. The aim is for the Afghan forces to be in the lead country-wide by the end of 2014."

Some of those targeted for the first transition include the relatively calm provinces of Parwan, Bamiyan and Panjshir, CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr reported earlier this week.

"but of course, we cannot succeed alone. The military is necessary, but we need a true comprehensive approach. that is a clear lesson of our experience in Afghanistan," Rasmussen said.

Some coalition countries are already backing that approach.

Canada, which is ending its combat mission in Afghanistan in July, announced Tuesday "a new role" to play in the war-torn nation, with a focus on security, diplomacy, human rights and development.

And a senior U.K. official confirmed Saturday that what British Prime Minister David Cameron has said publicly remains official policy: No matter how violent Afghanistan is at the end of 2014, the British will end combat operations by 2015.

The official says the process is on track to "begin transition in some provinces in early 2011" and that despite the country’s vow to stop fighting in four years, the British will remain involved in Afghanistan in a noncombat role.

"The alliance’s commitment to Afghanistan will endure beyond ISAF’s current mission," the official said.

NATO said the leaders at the gathering welcomed the bolstering of "the strength, equipment and capabilities" of Afghan troops. It said Afghan security force numbers are "on track to reach 300,000 by the end of 2011."

The agreement addresses the civilian casualty issue, and it comes a day after three Afghan civilians were accidentally killed and four others were wounded during an operation in Kunar province, in Afghanistan’s east.

Typifying the kind of incident that has undermined international credibility in Afghanistan, troops used mortar rounds to return fire against insurgents, but three or four rounds landed short of the targeted area, near a village.

"any civilian casualty is a tragedy," the declaration said. "we strongly condemn the intentional targeting of civilians by insurgents, who have caused the overwhelming majority of civilian deaths and injuries in Afghanistan.

"At the same time, we will continue to take all necessary steps to shield civilians from harm, measures that have already contributed to a substantial decrease in civilian casualties caused by ISAF and Afghan forces."

The partnership declaration urges the Afghan government to tackle government corruption and improve governing.

"this will help translate security gains into political gains and promote stability," the agreement said.

Also, Rasmussen announced stronger ties between the alliance and Russia, including the completion of arrangements for expanded transit of equipment to ISAF troops.

Zooey Deschanel to Play Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner’s Daughter Musical

Zooey Deschanel said yes!

The new Girl star was asked by country music legend Loretta Lynn to star in an upcoming Broadway musical about her life, Coal Miner’s Daughter, and she happily accepted.

PHOTOS: Zooey’s quirky red carpet style

Lynn, 80, revealed the casting news during a Grand Ole Opry show at the Ryman Auditorium on Thursday night by bringing Deschanel onto the stage. it was a deja vu moment for Lynn, who siilarly brought actress Sissy Spacek on the same stage in 1979 to announced she’d play her in the film Coal Miner’s Daughter — which later won Spacek an Academy Award for best Actress.

“I have a friend here tonight. I don’t know if ya’ll remember when Sissy Spacek was with me. I brought her out here with me. she about fainted. we both fainted,” Lynn said Thursday, according to The associated Press. “She went on to do the Coal Miner’s Daughter, and you know from there. well, there’s a little girl back stage that’s going to do the play of Coal Miner’s Daughter on Broadway. Zooey, where you at honey?”

“This is a great honor for me,” Deschanel , 32, said. “This is my hero.” The new best friends then sang biographical ballad “Coal Miner’s Daughter” together and after the show, Deschanel tweeted (with an adorable photo), “Loretta Lynn asked me to do “coal miner’s daughter” on broadway! I said yes!”

Andre 3000’s Jimi Hendrix biopic underway without estate support

LOS ANGELES – When it was announced that Andre Benjamin – better known as Outkast’s Andre 3000 – would be portraying legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix in a biopic, it put to rest years of rumors regarding who would play the psychedelic guitar god on the big screen.

The acclaimed rapper-actor-producer is attached to star in “All Is by my side,” an upcoming biopic based on an original screenplay from John Ridley (“Red Tails,” “Three Kings”). Ridley will also direct the film, which is produced by Darko Entertainment, Subotica Entertaiment and Matador Pictures.

“All Is by my Side” is based on interviews and archival materials and “captures the energy, the charisma, (and) the mind-boggling talent of a legend whose musical influence still resonates around the world today,” read Thursday’s official announcement.

“At its heart a love story, ’all Is by my Side’ is about a man growing up, falling in love and becoming Jimi.” Hayley Atwell (“Captain America: The first Avenger”) and Imogen Poots (“Fright Night”) have signed on to co-star.

Production is scheduled to get underway in Ireland later this month, but the film has already hit a potentially crippling roadblock: Hendrix’s estate says it has no plans to support the picture.

“Various media outlets have recently published accounts that indicate a feature-length Jimi Hendrix biographical film is nearing production. Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog, has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation,” read the lengthy statement issued by his estate.

“All Is by my Side” is reported to take place in England in 1966-67, the period when Hendrix recorded his heralded debut, “Are You Experienced.”

The lack of original music could prove problematic for marketing a big screen film to audiences hoping to get authentic Hendrix tunes. but it wouldn’t be the first time a Hendrix-related project had to do without. back in 2000, Showtime’s made-for-TV film “Hendrix,” starring “The Wire’s” Wood Harris, featured covers of his tunes. not exactly a big appeal for filmmakers hoping to launch a soundtrack worth buying, or the opportunity to launch catalog reissues.

Getting a Hendrix flick onto the silver screen has been years in the making, with a new rumor popping up at least once a year, starting with Laurence Fishburne (who famously portrayed Ike Turner) initially attached to one project.

But Benjamin has long made known his aspirations to take on Hendrix. His desire to fill Hendrix’s bell bottoms dates back to 2004, when Outkast was at the height of promoting its seminal double album of solo efforts, “Speakerboxx/ The love Below” (Hendrix’s influence could easily be felt on Benjamin’s disc). at that time, the rapper announced he would star in a biopic to be directed by Allen and Albert Hughes (“Menace II Society,” “From Hell,” “The Book of Eli”).

That 2004 film never came to fruition. nor did a project rumored to be directed by Lee Daniels from a Max Borenstein script that landed on the infamous Black List with Lenny Kravitz in the starring role.

There was also “Slide,” which was described as “a fictionalized account of what happened during Hendrix’s ’lost weekend’ in September 1969 when he was supposedly the subject of a hoax kidnapping, orchestrated by his manager.” Talks for that film also faded away.

A representative for the production companies making “All Is by my Side” said Thursday that they would not be commenting on the statement from the Hendrix estate.

When asked whether the biopic would feature the iconic rocker’s music, the rep said the production companies “appreciate the valid question, but we’re not getting into specifics outside of what we’ve shared so far.”

W-SR Rocketeers excel at national competition

WAVERLY, Iowa — the Waverly-Shell Rock Rocketeers finished 23rd in a field of 100 in their first appearance at the Team America Rocket Challenge.

The 10th national finals “fly-off” took place Saturday in Virginia.

The Waverly-Shell Rock team was the only one from Iowa to compete at the national level.

Captain Cole Chesnut, 18, a senior, said team members were pleased to do well enough on their first launch to advance in the aerospace competition.

The six high school students are part of the Waverly-Shell Rock Engineering Club.

“It went really good. we made the final launch,” Chesnut said.

Participants were instructed to design, build and launch a rocket that peaked at 800 feet and returned to earth in about 45 seconds without breaking the cargo — two fresh eggs.

Contestants also had to follow restrictions regarding weight and materials.

Unfortunately for the team, the rocket’s altimeter failed for launch no. 2, Chesnut said. nevertheless, he said placing 23rd means the team qualifies for NASA’s Student Launch Initiative.

That challenge involves creating and launching a rocket that travels one mile.

Chesnut said his team is definitely excited about the prospect of participating.

“We are just living the dream. Having a good time,” he added.

Members of the Waverly-Shell Rock Rocketeers also include Aaron Forest, John Kenealy, Kolton Rottink, Tanner Steere and Ethan Wise. Teacher Jason Reyerson serves as adviser.

NATO – Russia Council Fails to Make Decisions on Drug Eradication

On March 24 in Brussels the enlarged meeting of the Russia-NATO Council took place, which was dedicated to fighting Afghan drug threat. Viktor Ivanov, Head of Russia’s Federal Service for Drug Control (FSKN), voiced Russia’s proposals for the elimination of drug processing facilities, implementation of measures for the economic recovery of Afghanistan, its electrification and the creation of up to two million jobs to displace drugs from the Afghan economy. The Russian official presented a seven-point plan that foresees, among other things, an extension of the UN mandate for NATO troops in Afghanistan that would oblige them to eradicate poppy fields, as well as targeting the Taliban-led insurgency. Ivanov said at least 25 per cent of the opium crop should be destroyed as part of the proposed joint NATO-Russia plan. he added that Marjah, the former Taliban stronghold that NATO troops cleared in recent weeks, offered a unique opportunity to start the effort.

As was well expected, NATO made it clear through its representative, James Appathurai, that the alliance, i.e. the forces behind it, is not interested: we cannot be in a situation where we remove the only source of income for people who live in the second poorest country in the world without being able to provide them an alternative. that is simply not possible. NATO itself has come up with a better scheme – to pay drug producers so that they may refuse the opium poppy cultivation and heroin production.

It is obvious, that this is only a make-believe of struggle, and perhaps a convenient mechanism to appropriate the budget allocated for the purpose. after all, everybody understands that even if some of the poppy is destroyed by drug producers, as much and even more will appear a few miles away. and the show will continue, because the show must go on.

Most Russians think the real goals of the United States and its NATO partners in Afghanistan are a far cry from their declarations, especially as regards the functioning of the world’s main narco-state, the world factory of heroin. it is not accidental that heroin production there has increased more than 40 times since the arrival of NATO. and it is also not a secret that the peacekeeping mission of international forces in Afghanistan as yet has not obtained the mandate of the UN Security Council to destroy the poppy crops, which may well be regarded as an informal UN authorization of the North Atlantic Alliance contingent’s connivance in Afghan mujahideens’ heroin production. and Appathurai’s unequivocal statement on March 24 only confirms these conclusions. They seem doubtful only to those who deliberately shun the truth.

NATO’s goals concerning Afghan drugs, along with other equally important goals, may belong to the same long-term geopolitical strategy developed by the lords of the Euro-Atlantic civilization in the framework of their control over the key regions of the planet (‘key’ in terms of different cultural, resource, economic and political aspects). if you look at the political map of Eurasia and place the symbol of NATO – a four-pointed star – in the center of Afghanistan, you will find that each of the tips points to a strategically important area, controlling which the West can successfully meet the challenges posed by the recurrent crises of capitalism.

The Afghan territory is not only a very convenient lodgment for attacks on Iran or China, but a no less important location from where one may pit India against Pakistan, leak nuclear technology from Pakistan to Iran, and create such a degree of chaos, that will curb the economic development of the whole region. The latter is important also because the region has a potential to become a large market for China, India and Russia. if it happens, it will call into question the global U.S. hegemony (economic, political, military) and threaten the hegemony of the Western civilization at large.

It has to be admitted that, despite the veneer of the West, we are now witnessing the final stage of its existence in the form, in which it has existed for the past three centuries, and along with it, the logical conclusion of the capitalist project as a whole. The continued pegging of the West is possible, but the prolongation of its life will be short, unless the vector of its ideological and practical orientation changes. this change is hardly feasible, until the deep contradictions at the foundation of the Western world are revealed and acknowledged and the very Western outlook changes to humane. The West should acquire certain qualities allowing the world to live in harmony with nature and the Providence.

Previously the artificial constructs, which saved the West, were the two world wars of the twentieth century and the collapse of the Soviet Union. another saving hand may come in the form of staging a regional conflict, which will grow into a third world war involving nuclear weapons, the collapse of Russia and the clash of civilizations. Ultimately, the West will try to maintain its dominant position by imposing a general regression on the world through control of technology, seeking thereby to direct the globalization process ‘in the right direction’.

This means that further fighting will be very fierce. it cannot be different when it comes to life and death. it is for this reason that all the initiatives on Afghanistan coming from Russia and its allies will be rejected. even if they receive a formal approval from the North Atlantic Alliance, it will still amount to a denial, because the establishment of normal life and culture of Afghans, electrification and revival of industry in the republic would be against the goals of the Euro-Atlantic Bloc. and revitalizing Afghan economy will never be achieved without a coup de grace – eradicating opium crops. NATO’s refusal to do so on the grounds of depriving poor Afghan farmers from their only livelihood and setting them up against the Allied Forces is clearly a sign that it wishes to preserve the status quo.

The feigned lamentations over the failure to establish a reliable police force in Afghanistan are illustrative for that matter (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/drugs-and-desertion-how-the-uk-really-rates-afghan-police-1929508.html). The truth of the matter is the longer NATO stays in Helmand, the graver the problem becomes. because while NATO arduously guards the poppy fields, refusing to destroy them, the ones who suffer most are the natives and the people in the neighboring countries.

For half the police recruits to be addicted is only natural in Afghanistan, which has been designated as the chief world producer of opium. it is only natural because Afghans start taking their first drugs as children and whole villages die out from opium addiction. it is only natural because the addiction in Afghanistan is really mass, and Afghans have the shortest life expectancy in the region, even lower than in AIDS-stricken Africa – around 43.8 years. it is only natural because the law of supply and demand works in a reverse way with drugs: the supply generates and multiplies the demand. Thus in this opium war the people of Afghanistan are quite naturally chief victims.

So why simulate despaired noises in mass media, if you choose not to do the main thing – eradicate the opium crops? obviously, to distract attention from the truth: the Alliance is not going to do it. Nor is it going to leave Afghanistan. The Alliance is loath to do these things, because the benefits here exceed the losses. first of all, it permits NATO to gain control over the entire region. Afghan drugs weaken its rival powers – China, India, and Russia – decimating their youth, control Pakistan and Central Asia, penetrate Iran with its huge border fortifications and even pester Israel. what a tremendously advantageous geopolitical position for this giant opium-heroin factory

Then, there are financial benefits. According to the IMF, the turnover of the drug trade reaches approximately 4.5% of the entire world economy and is estimated at 500 billion U.S. dollars. it is well known, that the bulk of the revenues associated with the global trade in narcotics is not appropriated by terrorist groups and warlords. In the case of Afghanistan, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that a mere 2.7 billion accrues as revenue within Afghanistan. over 50% of this multi-billion dollar revenues of narcotics are deposited in the Western banking system and legalized in the world markets through various international and offshore financial schemes. Most of the large international banks together with their affiliates in the offshore banking havens launder large amounts of narco-dollars. Intelligence agencies, powerful business, drug traders and organized crime are competing for the strategic control over the heroin routes.

This trade can only prosper if the main actors involved in narcotics have political friends in high places. Legal and illegal undertakings are increasingly intertwined, the dividing line between businesspeople and criminals is blurred. In turn, the relationship among criminals, politicians and members of the intelligence establishment has tainted the structures of the state and the role of its institutions including the Military.

Thus it is understandable why the Alliance will not accept the proposals for the reconstruction of Afghan economy: this is not what NATO is there for. even if Russia vouches the financial side of the deal, it will delay the implementation of joint projects (if any) to reconstruct the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan as long as it finds expedient. on the other hand, it is capable of drawing Russia into a confrontation with the Islamic civilization. there are predictions that if Russia begins to destroy opium poppy fields on her own, NATO may create through controlled world media an image of bloodthirsty Russians, depriving Afghan civilians of their livelihood and destroying plantations together with local people (corpses duly produced). after that Bin Ladens, fostered by the CIA, will have Islamic fundamentalists start jihad against Russians. some believe the West now has capacities to throw Russia in the furnace of war with the Islamic Caliphate, or use her as a sword against China. anyway, we should get away from the formula, by which we sell our conscience for a mess of pottage. we are obliged to respond to the challenge of the third Opium War. otherwise we have no future.
